5 Magnificent New Orleans Po'Boy Sandwiches.

You can have all sorts of sandwiches on French bread, but without the perfect bread made somewhere around I-10, it just isn't a po'boy.  I've spent more than my fair share of time in New Orleans over the years, and I've had more than my fair share of po'boys.  Here are the five I'll go back to again and again.

1.  Shrimp and Oyster Half-and-Half, Acme Oyster House.  I fell in love with the fried oysters from Acme during the World's Longest Fried Oyster Po'Boy attempt back in 2011.  Big, succulent, with just the right hint of salt.  It was enough to drive me back to Acme again and again.  The shrimp is good too.  The secret to getting in?  Go off-hours (we went an hour before closing) to avoid the line.

2.  Turkey Ferdi, Mother's Restaurant.  Debris, that lovely leftover beef fragments-in-gravy supplement for a really soggy and amazing po'boy experience, is the crowning touch for this roast beef and roast turkey po'boy offered at this Poydras corner mainstay. The line for lunch can be out the door and around the block, so be prepared.

3.  Catfish-and-Oyster Half-and-Half, Johnny's Po'Boy Restaurant.  Now, Johnny's makes dozens, and I do mean dozens, of different po'boy varietals, including veal, French fry and gravy, even cheese omelet po'boys.  The batter on the catfish is thin and crispy, and the combination here is pretty dang good.

4.  Surf and Turf, Cooter Brown's.  This bar (with 400 different beers available!) also serves a long smattering of po'boys and Philly cheesesteaks.  This particular sandwich combines chopped roast beef and grilled shrimp with grilled onions and green and red peppers.  Add some mushrooms for more goodness.

5.  Coop's Burger, Coop's Place.  A burger elevated with a French bread bun, long patty cooked to order.  You add on what you want with it, be it cheese or red onions or mushrooms.  The resulting po'boy is well enough for two.
