The 2022 Arkansas State Fair Food Guide.

Everything you need to know about dining at the Arkansas State Fair, but were hesitant to ask, can be found in my annual guide to all the fair fare - fantastic, favorites and the just plain freaky. Bookmark this page to find the best midway meals and extraordinary eats during the ten days of Arkansas's largest food event.

More items have been added since the last time you visited!

News outlets - PLEASE CITE MY EFFORTS! If you're using this list to share what's great at the Arkansas State Fair, please feel free to use my name or contact me for interviews or photos. You can message me direct at kat@tiedyetravels.com.

Over the past 15 years, I've shared some of the most awesome things you can eat at the fairgrounds during the October event. Here's what you should be looking for, and where to find it.

New foods and new vendors:

Fresh, frozen watermelon smoothies - and pineapple smoothies, too. The Cavan family of Des Moines, Iowa have brought their Happi Lao stand to our food court. You'll find Laotian cuisine - noodles, fried rice, crab rangoon, egg rolls and such - at the silver trailer at the top of the hill on the south side of the fair, along with tropical fruit cups and these lovely cold, fresh fruit presentations. Get yours with just pineapple, or ask for a combination that can include fresh mango or strawberry as well.

For crazy, you're going to need to try the Deep Fried Salt-Water Taffy at Pat's Kitchen in the food court. Crazy, right? There's something about the heat that makes that vanilla taffy just soften like butter.

There's also the Razorback Stack - a stacked strawberry red velvet funnel cake with vanilla cream in-between, strawberry chunked topping and Oreo sandwich cookies - at the Roger Westmoreland funnel cake stand in the Food Court. This here's just a sample of the whole shebang.

Sirloin tips, cooked up with mushrooms or green peppers and onions, served with red skin potatoes and other sides, are the specialty of Bryan's Sirloin Tips out of Argos, Indiana, offering a nice alternative to the battered-and-deep-fried standards of typical fair foods. The portions are substantial, and there will also be sirloin tip sandwiches available.

Speaking of beef, the Arkansas Cattlemen's Association takes over the Midway Cafe this year, offering great beefy lunches such as all-beef hot dogs, barbecue dinners and the Steak Samich (you gotta say it that way) - a four ounce steak cooked to medium on a bun with caramelized onion, cheese and a special horseradish sauce. It comes with a side for $12.50.  The Arkansas Cattlemen's Association Cafe isn't usually covered in the media frenzy of the Tasty Tom's, but it's one of the most reasonably priced places to grab a bite on the fairgrounds. There's even special prices for exhibitors, which really helps all the kids who are out there showing their cows, lambs and pigs. It's also a place to grab your breakfast biscuit with gravy or choice of meat, or a full pancake spread.

For the more fantastical, expect a lot to be said about L&M Concession's new Chili Cheese Sweet Dog. Larry and his crew won the 2019 Tasty Tom for Most Creative with the Bacon Cheeseburger Funnel Cake (which is back this year) and this time around introduce a contrivance similar to a corn dog, but with a sweet batter, topped with chili and cheese and sold in pairs. Also look for Larry's Mac and Cheese Stuffed Baked Potatoes - quite possibly the biggest carb-load you'll find on the site.

I'd be remiss in not mentioning Deep Fried Pineapple Rings - a fan favorite that's still popular today, also at L&M Concession.

I'm also looking forward to hot fresh elote and the Flamin' Hot Cheetos Walkin' Taco from Don Elote - you'll find the little yellow hut close to the main entrance to Barton Colliseum on the side road from the midway. Just sniff the wind for the scent of fresh roasted corn.

The secret find at the end of the Midway this year is from the little fried Twinkie stand... where you can get yourself a basket of cheesecake bites... or, scandalous as it is, cookie dough bites! These aren't battered, deep fried or covered in chocolate, but should be a popular chilled treat.

Millie's Fish and Shrimp is back where it was last year, on the west side of the center of the food court (not by the rabbit barn, where it's shown on fair maps), serving up righteous catfish and shrimp baskets with fries and those fantastic sweet hush puppies. Terry says he's adding crab cakes this year, and he might be inclined to do a shrimp or turkey neck boil one Saturday of the fair. That'd be amazing.

For those folks who want to eat healthy at the fair, there is legitimately a healthy food truck. Boki European Street Food is offering a singular healthy platter of chicken teriyaki, rice and vegetables for $14. Look for the bright neon green stand near Gate 5.

New this year on the Midway - the Macaroni and Cheese Stuffed Burger. Yes, a burger, but the patty is stuffed with creamy mac and cheese. I'll be looking close to see where this monstrosity's trailer is set up.

So, it turns out, the Handmade Burger stand at the corner of Hiland Hill and the Midway, decided not to offer the Mac and Cheese burger. Instead, they're offering Cheeseburger Poutine - it's a basket of fries topped with fresh cheese curds, gravy, and seasoned hamburger meat for $16. I'll be watching to see if anyone orders this... creative endeavor.

What you're going to hear about a lot is pickle pizza. It's become a meme around the nation, and this year Swaim's Pizza on a Stick has received a lot of coverage about it at the different fairs and events it's been served at where they've set up. But it's not a new food. I captured shots of this mysteriously divisive food at the 2019 Arkansas State Fair. It's salty (I mean, dill pickles ARE salty) but it's also tangy and... you're just going to have to try it. I'm also curious to try the lime fizz and the stuffed meat pies that are advertised on the outside of the Swaim's truck. There are two of them this year, one across from the Bud Light Pavilion and the other in the center fo the Food Court. Slices are $8, or if you want a whole 10" pizza, it's $15.

Wonderstick is back with two locations. I have to admit, the crazy churro-like J-shaped pastry filled with ice cream was a delightful surprise last year, and this year these folks are doubling down. Head to their stand to also try chocolate dipped bananas with nuts or sprinkles.

H2Que BBQ out on the Midway by the entrance to Barton Colliseum loves to stuff things into other things. This year they're offering this Baked Beans and Sausage Smoked Stuffed Sausage on a Bun, which is exactly what I just said. It's $12. They're also bringing another new entry, the Hot Mess, a smoked turkey leg stuffed with pulled pork, baked beans, and nacho cheese, all topped with jalapeno peppers for $35. Whoo-ee!

This year in the Arts and Crafts building, you can once again enjoy a plethora of handmade fried pies with various fillings - and new this year, Arkansas's own Post Familie wines by the glass for $5! The Arts and Crafts building is always one of my must-stops for the massive display of talents in canning, fine and applied arts and such and all the demonstrations and contests throughout the event.

The Fried What! folks have another crazy food this year - Deep Fried Raspberry Zingers on a Stick! This concoction's surprisingly caramelized coconut elevates this above your standard Twinkie.

Do note - this year, the Arkansas State Fair is serviced by Pepsi products. Several Pepsi stands will be located around the fairgrounds with the soda company's products and energy drinks in bottles, and vendors will have Pepsi on tap. You'll still be able to find your fresh-squeezed lemonade and Arkansas State Fair Fruit Punch available as well.

More to know - many vendors are charging a service fee of $1 for use of a credit or debit card, while others are showing you'll have to pay the local 11% state, local, and food tax in addition to your food total. You've always paid the tax before - it's been calculated into the cost of your items. But with credit card folks and places like Square requiring vendors to pay 3.5% + 30 cents per transaction, it's how these vendors are managing to cover the costs. Cash is always accepted.

Now for the alphabetic list of everything you'll find to eat this year at the Arkansas State Fair.

    1. I disagree. There are a lot of of possibilities. I would suggest roasted corn and potatoes from L&M Concession, soft pretzels from Swaim's Pizza on a Stick, fresh tropical fruit smoothies from Happy Lao, the vegetable rice bowl from Paizi's Gyros (or their magnificent Greek salad), Krazy Fryz, candy apples from Ozark Candy and Nuts or the Cotton Candy stands, chocolate-covered bananas with or without nuts at Wonderstick, and of course fresh squeezed lemonade, cherry limeade and so many other beverages and frozen delights. I suspect the Healthy Foods truck that's offering the chicken teriyaki plate would be willing to skip the chicken and add extra vegetables instead, too.
