Hello! I'm Kat Robinson, and I preach the gospel of Arkansas food. And every year in October, I take time out from traveling the state and digging through research to create for you a guide to all the neat new things you'll find to eat at the Arkansas State Fair, alongside all those delectable delights you go back for year after year.
This year, big things are coming to the Fair in cones! There's also great balls of... well, read on for that. And we have reached the point where the $20 turkey leg is the baseline price.
The vendors who return to the fair each year are hardworking folks like you and me. They're managing to stay on top of things despite rising food and fuel costs. The prices may seem high for what you're getting - but these folks are paying a premium to be there, just so you can have your corndog and funnel cake.
New vendors at this year include a mac and cheese truck, a cobbler trailer, and The Lord's Kitchen, out of Farmington. They operate on a donation-base there, but will have a set price point for the fair. I urge you to stop by and chat with these guys, they're good folks.
There's also Delia's Delights, operating out of the Midway Cafe this year, another local operation. They do breakfast, for us early fairgoers.
SO - here we go!
This year's neat and new fair foods you need to check out!
The Big Poppa Tot Bomb. BOOM! Remember the Big Poppa Tot from last year? What if that was amplified by 200%? This is literally the bomb - pulled pork, shredded hashbrowns, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, all in a ball? H2Que BBQ from Jonesboro has this magnificence - but that's not all. These are great balls rolled in hot Cheetoes and drizzled with a homemade ranch and barbecue sauce. They are huge and they're just absolutely extraordinary. Just one truck this year for H2Que... find them right off the Midway close to the entrance of Barton Colliseum.McKinney Concessions, which has several trucks around the fair, debuts a new corndog this year with the Blue Taki Corndog - a spicy and bright version of the classic. This is the stick you'll see waved around from the fair, and my kid says this is the one to try.
Two of the debut foods we really should be talking about are in a cone. First off, tell me how sweet this is - a cone full of cobbler? Huston Concessions makes its Arkansas State Fair debut with a bevy of cone-borne treats, including Cobbler In A Cone. Whether's it's traditional peach, apple, or cherry or something crazy - like the strawberry lemonade Cobbler in a Cone they offered at this year's Oklahoma State Fair - it's going to be a new sensation for all of us!
Then there's the other creation-in-a-cone - the Mac and Cheese in a cone. That's right - macaroni and cheese served up in a cone you can eat. What's more? There's all sorts of embellishments, from the Mike's Hot Honey Chicken Bacon mac to maple bacon mac and buffalo chicken mac. Crazy? Sure! But that's why you go to the Arkansas State Fair to eat, right? The new vendor is L&M Mac Company.More cones? Wonderstick is back with two locations - one by Gate 5, the other on the west side of the food court. The Sundae concession is back on the midway. Cones are in this year!
L&M Concessions (the longtime Arkansas-based food trailer, not the new L&M Mac Company with the cones) has already debuted its new fair food - the Bacon Fruit Covered Funnel Cake, with a load of strawberries, pineapple, and blueberries and a good shake of bacon atop a powdered sugar dusted funnel cake. Should be excellent!
The Lord's Kitchen is the place to get catfish this year - it's alpha-gal friendly (IYKYK) and it's cooked hot and fresh onsite. They'll also have ribbon fries covered with your choice of pulled pork, chicken, or beef, alongside topped nachos. I'm hoping they bring their legendary spaghetti grilled cheese, too.
Need a refreshing beverage? Check out Sip N' Sunshine at the south end of the food court in the gray trailer. They have Lotus drinks - I'm really excited about the Pixie Dream, a pomegranate and orange chilled delight with almond milk foam. Divine!Delia's Delight in the Midway Cafe spot at the south end of the Midway - by the swine barn - is offering Mexican-style breakfasts, with bean empanadas, eggs with chorizo, and tamales on the menu. They'll offer authentic Mexican plates such as cohinita pibil tortas, salchipapas, and papa lote, alongside quesadillas, empanadas, and burritos.
Swaim's Pizza on a Stick, with locations across from the Bud Light Pavilion, at the center of the Food Court, and at the corner of the Midway and - well, do we still call it Hiland Hill if Hiland Dairy is now by the Hall of Industry? We'll call it... Flight Deck Hill this year. Anyway, their new pizza of the year is Hot Cheeto Bacon Pickle Ranch Pizza. You're going to see Pickle Pesto Pizza all over the media, too - this one, I told you about first.
Barry's Baked Potato, Sip N' Sunshine, and Fried What! are all back this year... and I hope to share their cool new foods soon.
Remember - unlike other fairs out there, you can get food with cash - not tickets - at the Arkansas State Fair. Do note - most of the purveyors of state fair food are charging at 10.65% transactional sales tax and surcharge on credit and debit card sales. Many of those who aren't, are charging a buck or two per transaction. Save money, bring cash.
As always, if you're with a website, newspaper, magazine, television station, radio station, or just need some information to use for your website, please cite my efforts. If you need full resolution images, or you'd like to have me come talk about the fair on your show or in an interview, email me at kat@tiedyetravels.com. PLEASE cite me as a source if you use this guide.
With no further ado, here's this year's alphabetic compendium of available dishes.
