Timeline

THIS IS AN OUT OF DATE PAGE.

However, there's a lot of places that link to it, so it's still here.

To find a restaurant I've covered, please use the search box.

Restaurants serve several functions. They are, of course, places to acquire sustenance of the body. For many of these older restaurants, though, they've become gathering places where families of sorts are put together, bands of regulars always returning, leagues of visiting diners molding their travels to accommodate a hearty meal. In many ways, the restaurants that stay around become places to acquire sustenance of the soul.

This is a work in progress -- a timeline of when iconic Arkansas restaurants came into being.  Feel free to send me your suggestions to kat@tiedyetravels.com -- and any corrections as well.

Restaurants are listed by first appearance, regardless of interruption of service.  The oldest continually operating restaurant still operating in Arkansas is Franke's Cafeteria  The White House Cafe in Camden.

Locations in red are listed in Arkansas Pie: A Delicious Slice of the Natural State.

Locations in purple or blue have received Kat's blog attention, either here at Tie Dye Travels or on the Eat Arkansas blog with the Arkansas Times. *Note -- the Eat Arkansas blog is now behind a paywall.

Rich's Hamburgers in Pine Bluff was open in the 1970's. I ate there when I was a kid through high school when I graduated in 1988. Maybe it was 1977 but not 1987.

    Take care.

  4. What was the name of the hamburger place in Ozark where you got off the freeway heading toward Fayetteville in 1969-1972. Had HUGE burgers - were delicious and cost $0.65 each at that time. Coming from or going to Fayetteville, would always buy 2 & save one for later.

  6. Shakey's went out in 1980 - on Rodney P anyway. Way Out Willies was originally Fajita Willies but had to change the name even though ownership was the same. Seems like it went out around the new millennium.

  8. Ft. Smith B-B-Q long time favorite Jerry Neels on Phoenix Ave. Another Ft. Smith B-B-Q is Pink Flamingo. Fayetteville Hogs Breath Eatery, stuffed baked potatoes and funnel cakes, I ate there all the time in the early to mid 80's. It was still there a few years ago, don't know if it is the same owners. Fred's Hickory Inn in Bentonville has to be one of my all time favorites. They had the best smoked beans. Of course the now defunct Coy's Restaurant (B-B-Q and prime rib) in Fayetteville was fantastic. In the 80's NW Ark had some of the very best B-B-Q places and all were different.

  12. I was born in Pine Bluff and lived there til about '81, and I remember eating there when my family visited back for at least a year or two after that. The milkshakes were to die for, until my parents realized I had a milk allergy. :(

And Farrell's in NLR was there in McCain Mall until 89 or so, I think. It was the very first restaurant I went to without an adult, with a friend in 87 (7th grade) or so. It still exists on the west coast, so I hear.

  13. WOW! This is the mother load of Arkansas restaurants! I have eaten at many of these places, and I didn't even realize how long they have been there. Thank you so much for sharing. I can't wait to try some of the restaurants listed.

  14. The Lion's Share in McCain Mall was Brittany's prior to that, in the earlier days of the mall. It was always good, as far as I can remember. Thanks for this great list!

    1. The Lion's Share was never anything prior to that. My dad was a brick mason and worked on building that portion of the mall. I can remember me and my mom taking him lunch there while he was working, This was prior to any part of the mall being open to the public. I have very vivid memories of that, and always thought it was so cool to go there after it was open and place our order over the phones at the table, also because my dad had helped built it I thought that was pretty neat too.

  16. Does anyone remember the name of the little restaurant in 70s -90s that was on Main St. in Little Rock, near 3rd St. Next to Bennett's Military store? They were famous for their Chilli Spaghetti, and the owner was Polish I think. He was killed in a robbery of his restaurant I think. I use to eat there at least 3 times a week. It was really good. Anyone remember?

  29. I believe DeVito's is now closed. Myrtie Mae's is a client of mine. I used to hang out at The White House Cafe in Camden, when I lived there. Last time I went back they had ruined it in my opinion, got away from a dive bar with good food and went more home cooked meals where you could get a beer.I don't remember George's Chicken. But I remember a BBQ place called Chicken George's. Little old couple owned it, had the best slaw ever.
